Music and Emotion Activity

Your task for this assignment will be to predict the emotional response of your classmates to a one-minute excerpt of a music selection of your choice. Your selections of music may be from any genre as long as it contains no foul language and is in good taste. Penalty points will be assessed if you violate this guideline.

Select a musical piece that will elicit one of the following five emotions:

1. RELAXED
2. ROMANCE
3. HAPPY
4. SAD
5. EXCITED

Music selections must be on a CD or (MP3/WAV file) that you take to class on the day of your presentation. A note with your name and track selection must be attached to the CD (MP3/WAV file).

Your grade will be determined by the percentage of students who correctly identify the emotion you are attempting to elicit. Grades will be as follows:

5 PTS >90%
4 PTS >80%

3 PTS >70%
2 PTS >60%
1 PTS >50%

You may not tell students in the class which emotions you are trying to elicit in advance. This is cheating and if identified will result in a grade of “0” for this assignment.

Students who accurately identify >75% of desired emotions will receive 2 additional extra credit points.
